ROAR: COLLABORATION WITH ROAR THROUGH DATA SUBMISSION
COLLABORATION WITH ROAR THROUGH DATA SUBMISSION
The ROAR Isolate Database brings
together commensal and complimentary pathogen datasets from diverse geographic
regions, hosts, and environments. The database is a resource for researchers
studying the evolution, emergence and spread of resistance genes. We invite you
to submit existing relevant data. We encourage you to read the entire
contents of this page before submitting data online.
The ROAR Database accepts isolate datasets that are derived
from non-clinical sources, such as healthy people, food, animals, and the
environment. While the ROAR database focuses on non-clinical isolates,
clinical isolate data are accepted if they address the transfer of resistance
between commensals and pathogens, examine the effect of antibiotic use on
resistance, assess the relationship between virulence and resistance, or if
they may be compared to commensal datasets. Submissions consist of
isolate-level raw data, not aggregate statistics. Note that data must be in
Excel, Access, or another column-by-column format.
In addition to basic source, collection, and identification
data, the database currently accepts data generated through use of the
following methods: genotyping, phenotyping (including antibiotic susceptibility
testing (AST), serotyping, and virulence factor typing), multi-locus sequence
typing (MLST), and pulse field gel elecrophoresis (PFGE). Additional data may
be accepted under certain circumstances. See Comprehensive List of Tables,
Fields, and Accepted Values for more information.
The Online Data Submission Process
ROAR has developed an online data submission system that allows the
user to create a web-based, customized dynamic template into which to cut and
paste data from an Excel or Access spreadsheet. This process takes 1-2 hours,
depending on the complexity of the dataset.
After clicking on the ‘Submit Dataset’ button, the user is asked to
answer a series of questions regarding the dataset. Based on the responses to
these questions, the computer creates one to six ‘tables’ of applicable fields
(see Comprehensive List of Fields) corresponding to the following categories:
Demographic Information, AST, genotype, phenotype, MLST, and PFGE. The user
enters data column-by-column into these tables in a guided, controlled order by
cutting and pasting from another spreadsheet. In some cases the user may need
to create a new column in the original spreadsheet in order to fill a required
field, or in order to convert data into a required format or acceptable value.
After data is pasted into the last table, the user has an opportunity to review
and edit the data on a cell-by-cell basis and offer dataset-level comments
before final submission.
After submitting the dataset, the user is redirected to the ‘My
Submitted Datasets’ page, where the submitted dataset will appear. The user may
access, edit, expand, and view the status of the dataset at any time after submission
from this page.
Submitted datasets are reviewed by ROAR staff for quality control
purposes. The data submitter may be contacted by ROAR staff during this time
via email or telephone. The submitter is notified by email when the dataset is
published to the website.
Data Ownership, Access, and Use
Use of ROAR Database Data that you submit is governed and
your submission is protected by our legally binding Terms of Use. Only
registered users with a password can view and download your data. By submitting
a dataset to the ROAR Database you:
Agree to allow your personal contact information to be
posted on the web and associated with your data.
Agree to answer questions about your data to ensure
accuracy.
Receive acknowledgement when an analysis using your data
is presented or published.
Retain copyright and intellectual property rights to your
data.
Are NOT obligated to provide further data or bacterial
strains; you control your strains.
Are NOT obligated to respond to requests by other
investigators for strains, information, or collaboration.
Preparing for Online Data Submission
We strongly recommend that you reformat your data to conform to ROAR
fields and accepted values prior to beginning the online data submission
process. There are a total of six possible customized tables generated in the
online submission process. Each table has a finite number of possible fields.
Some fields accept an unlimited range of values, while others accept only
limited values. To assist you in evaluating and reformatting your data, ROAR
has created the following tools:
Spreadsheet Template (coming soon)
Downloadable Excel Spreadsheet with all possible fields
organized by table.
Compare your current fields to analogous ROAR fields and ensure that
you have recorded values that will be accepted by the ROAR database. If not,
you may need to create new fields and convert the recorded values into accepted
values.
Optional: Prepare your data for online submission.
Submit Data using the online data submission system
by clicking the ‘SUBMIT DATASET’ button below. Follow the provided
instructions. After submission you will be redirected to your ‘My
Submitted Datasets’ page.
After submission, your data is reviewed by ROAR staff for
quality control purposes. You may be contacted during this process.
You will be notified via email when your data is published
to the website.
